Chapter 4

❆ Noelle ❆

We’ve been at Nico’s cabin for a couple of hours. The sun is just starting to rise. I’m so tired, but I can’t fall asleep because I’m still so cold. He was nice enough to make us hot chocolate. He even started a fire in his fireplace. Whoever his friend is, he was nice enough to not only stock up his fridge and cabinets with food, but he also brought him enough wood for the fireplace to last weeks.

Even though I’ve been as close to the fireplace as I can possibly be without being inside it, I can’t get warm. Nico even gave me the thickest blanket he has, which was the comforter off his own bed. It’s no use.

“I’m actually starting to worry about you,” Nico mumbles from the longer couch across from me. The one I’m on is a loveseat that he’s moved closer to the fire.

I shiver. “C-can’t s-stop.” I close my eyes and sniffle.

Nico stretches as he shifts onto his side. “Come here.”

My eyes widen at him. “I’m f-f-fine.”

“You know if you don’t do what I tell you, I’m just going to make you.”

I shake my head and snuggle more under the comforter. “It’s r-really f-fine.”

“Noelle. Come on. Seriously. You’re cold. Everything I’ve tried so far isn’t helping. Including giving you a pair of my sweats and my sweatshirt that I warmed up in the dryer. I’ve given you hot chocolate. I’ve made sure that fire is roaring. Get over here. I can’t get you to the hospital, and you’re nearing hypothermia stages at this point. Your lips are blue, and I know it ain’t lipstick because you hate makeup. Let me use my body heat to help warm you up. It’s not like you haven’t been in my arms before.”

“Th-that w-was before you f-fucked up.”

“Before I fucked up?” He barks out a laugh that’s filled with such an intense level of anger and hurt that I briefly forget about how cold I am. His reaction takes me aback. “Just get over here, Noelle. Trust me. I don’t want to be anywhere near you. I hate you as much as you hate me, but I can’t handle watching you die when I know I can help. Just do it, or I’ll just walk over there, pick you up, and bring you over here myself.”

I just stare at him in open-mouthed shock, but I do what he says because I don’t want to shiver anymore. I know how serious hypothermia can be. So, I take a breath and throw the comforter off me. I stomp the few steps to the couch and lay next to him with my back to him as I throw the comforter over us both.

Almost instantly, and much to my dismay, I feel warmer. His body heat against mine feels way too familiar. Too comforting. I close my eyes as he adjusts the comforter. He wraps his arms around me and pulls me as close to his body as he can.
