Chapter 4
â Noelle â
Weâve been at Nicoâs cabin for a couple of hours. The sun is just starting to rise. Iâm so tired, but I canât fall asleep because Iâm still so cold. He was nice enough to make us hot chocolate. He even started a fire in his fireplace. Whoever his friend is, he was nice enough to not only stock up his fridge and cabinets with food, but he also brought him enough wood for the fireplace to last weeks.
Even though Iâve been as close to the fireplace as I can possibly be without being inside it, I canât get warm. Nico even gave me the thickest blanket he has, which was the comforter off his own bed. Itâs no use.
âIâm actually starting to worry about you,â Nico mumbles from the longer couch across from me. The one Iâm on is a loveseat that heâs moved closer to the fire.
I shiver. âC-canât s-stop.â I close my eyes and sniffle.
Nico stretches as he shifts onto his side. âCome here.â
My eyes widen at him. âIâm f-f-fine.â
âYou know if you donât do what I tell you, Iâm just going to make you.â
I shake my head and snuggle more under the comforter. âItâs r-really f-fine.â
âNoelle. Come on. Seriously. Youâre cold. Everything Iâve tried so far isnât helping. Including giving you a pair of my sweats and my sweatshirt that I warmed up in the dryer. Iâve given you hot chocolate. Iâve made sure that fire is roaring. Get over here. I canât get you to the hospital, and youâre nearing hypothermia stages at this point. Your lips are blue, and I know it ainât lipstick because you hate makeup. Let me use my body heat to help warm you up. Itâs not like you havenât been in my arms before.â
âTh-that w-was before you f-fucked up.â
âBefore I fucked up?â He barks out a laugh thatâs filled with such an intense level of anger and hurt that I briefly forget about how cold I am. His reaction takes me aback. âJust get over here, Noelle. Trust me. I donât want to be anywhere near you. I hate you as much as you hate me, but I canât handle watching you die when I know I can help. Just do it, or Iâll just walk over there, pick you up, and bring you over here myself.â
I just stare at him in open-mouthed shock, but I do what he says because I donât want to shiver anymore. I know how serious hypothermia can be. So, I take a breath and throw the comforter off me. I stomp the few steps to the couch and lay next to him with my back to him as I throw the comforter over us both.
Almost instantly, and much to my dismay, I feel warmer. His body heat against mine feels way too familiar. Too comforting. I close my eyes as he adjusts the comforter. He wraps his arms around me and pulls me as close to his body as he can.
